One of the pillars for the future of AV Alumitran, and the planet in general, is to contribute to sustainable development. As members of the aluminium industry, we are incorporating measures that help combat climate change.
One of these measures has been to increase the use of raw materials that reduce the carbon footprint of our activity. One example is Hydro’s Reduxa aluminium, which we already use in our factory. This raw material has a carbon footprint per kg of aluminium that is less than a quarter of the global average, which is a major advance and makes our profiles and products even more environmentally friendly.
We are also committed to solar energy to contribute to energy savings. A more sustainable way to produce ‘greener’ aluminium with benefits for everyone thanks to energy self-consumption. A more environmentally friendly and forward-looking extrusion process.
A smaller carbon footprint and energy self-consumption are the two pillars of this strategy.
The pilot project consisted of installing a total of 1607 KWp of solar panels at two of our plants (Villarejo and Móstoles) during April and May 2022.
This has enabled us to generate 1.2 GWh that we have avoided consuming from the grid, which not only represents a cost saving for AV Alumitran, but also comes directly from renewable sources, in this case solar, from our own panels.
To give a better idea, the savings are equivalent to burning 480 tonnes of coal and we have prevented 570 tonnes of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere. To put it in very graphic terms, it would be equivalent to planting a total of 780 trees.
In addition, all the remaining energy we purchase from the supplier is generated from renewable sources, with 100% green certification from the CNMC.
Following the positive experience of this first phase, in December 2022 work began to add a further 1.1 MW of installed power, which will enable us to continue reducing our carbon footprint and make aluminium production and extrusion “greener”, because a better future for everyone depends not only on generating better solutions, but also on doing so in a more sustainable way.
